Censorship is a hot topic for libraries. To navigate this environment, it helps to fully understand the context and application of reading. In this presentation we will explore the cognitive and emotional impacts of reading. Using educational and psychological lenses we will explore how texts relate and integrate with the readiness and development of readers. Applying these ideas helps us to facilitate the growth of intentional and critical readers. Understanding this background will help librarians speak up and support their collections while at the same time offering empathy for the stance of members of the community.
