Working at the reference desk at the main branch of the Salt Lake Community College Library has given us a unique perspective on interacting with library patrons. SLCC is the most diverse school in the state, and the only community college. As such, our patron base is a mixture of students, community members, staff and faculty. Many of our students are non-traditional in age, college attendance, part-time students, working parents. Attendees will learn about how working with this unique group has informed our practice, the research supporting relationship building, strategies for transforming transactions into relationships, and how building those relationships can improve library services and patron satisfaction while also fostering successful outcomes such as student retention and ongoing library use.
